Olympic Champion Alysa Liu Chooses Development Over Immediate Competition

Editor’s summary: The American figure skater will sit out the 2026–27 season to refine her technique, challenging the idea that elite women athletes must compete continuously to protect their careers.

UNITED STATES — Olympic figure-skating champion Alysa Liu will sit out the 2026–27 competitive season while working on her technique, she announced this week.

Liu reassured supporters that she intends to return to competition. She became the first American woman since 2002 to win Olympic gold in women’s singles at the Milano Cortina Games and also contributed to the United States’ team gold medal.

Athletes frequently face pressure to maximise commercial and competitive opportunities immediately after Olympic success. Taking a season away may therefore be interpreted as unusual even when it supports longer-term performance.

Figure skating places significant physical and psychological demands on young competitors. Training involves repeated jumps, falls, public scoring and constant comparison of body shape and artistic presentation.

A planned pause can allow technical adjustment without the weekly pressure of competition. It can also provide recovery time after an Olympic cycle structured around qualification, peak performance and intense media attention.

Liu has previously stepped away from competition and later returned. That history gives her decision additional context, but it should not encourage outsiders to diagnose her motivations or health.

Female athletes often receive intrusive speculation about weight, puberty and personal relationships. Responsible reporting should remain with the reason Liu has publicly provided: she wants time to improve her technique.

Her choice also raises a useful discussion about athlete autonomy. Federations, coaches and sponsors benefit from continuous visibility, but competitors must retain authority over when and how they participate.

The season will proceed without one of its leading champions, creating opportunities for other skaters. Liu’s absence should not diminish those athletes’ achievements, just as their emergence does not reduce the significance of her intended return.

A champion’s career is not required to follow a continuous upward line. Sometimes long-term ambition includes deliberately stepping away from the next event.
